Many plants have chemical constituents that can be toxic or have some side effect if taken in large amounts. Nutmeg can be toxic in large amounts, as well as licorice. Broccoli can be goitrogenic if taken in excess, nightshades (tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, potatoes) can exacerbate arthritic conditions, should we stay away from all these foods? I don't think blanket statements should be made about any plants, not even the coca plant, as native South Americans chew it in its natural state to give them energy.
